You decide to go back to the castle in hopes that the assassins have left for good.

Nope.

When you are nearing the castle, you see a couple of dim figures next to the walls. One of them spot you and the others start drawing knives. You try to run back, only to have a sharp pain sear up your leg. You glance back and realize your mistake; a long, sharp throwing knife is sticking halfway into your leg and is covered in blood. You fall over and your guards stand in front of you to hold the assassins off. But you know your life is near its end and you just want the misery to end. You crawl between your guards, and when they try to block you, you say, "It's too late." Those are your final words as the guards retreat and you simply sigh as the killers take your life.
