Hello everyone, and happy belated Fourth of July, if that's something relevant to you!
Not a great report this month; between illness, other work, travel, and a baby on the way, it's been difficult to get any extra work done.
It's likely that this slowdown will continue for at least a few more months. I will continue to work on Choosology when possible, and endeavor to continue updating once per month, but I can't promise much more than that at the moment.
As far as progress this month: work is continuing on the "New Experiment" page, specifically on creating the image-picking widget. This will be necessary in other parts of the site as well, so it needs to be designed fairly well, and progress is steady on that front. With any luck, it will be a little more fancy than the current widget!
Time, she flies...
Just a quick check-in this month...
All's well (busy... but well), and work is proceeding on the "New Experiment" window.
The work in progress can be seen below.
You'll also notice some changes to the look of the tabs; this is still in progress (as everything, technically, is), but the old look had to go because it would not play well with different sizes of screen (like, for example, a tablet). I hope nobody is too disappointed!
Happy May! As a busy life continues to swirl around me, work continues on Choosology. This month's work accomplished the following:
- Fixing display issue on adventure slides on front page
- Continuing to track down and fix issues resulting from switching between/reloading different screens
- implementing a more responsive layout for the "My Stuff" tabs, to improve views on smaller screens
- implementing the "Delete Adventure" functionality
- And last, but certainly not least, adding new icons for both the main navigation and the My Stuff tabs:
In addition, I spent some time helping a few CYOCYOA users with their various login/adventure-saving issues.
I was not able to complete the adventure-creation part of the workflow. I suspect it will take longer than first thought, but it's an extremely important part that I can't afford to shortchange at this stage. However, I'm hoping to focus on it and finish it in the upcoming month.
In the meantime... Keep on choosin'!*
*NB: not actually a new slogan. please disregard.
April is here, and with it, light in both the mornings AND evenings! In addition, external responsibilities have cooled off (aka no more overtime crunches at work for a while), and development can return to its original pace.
The last month of work has been almost entirely focused on tackling some lingering bugs, which are quite frustrating but need to be handled (the solution to the problem I thought I fixed in the last update really just opened the door for a new issue).
As mentioned, though, I have a renewed verve to get Choosology up and running, at least with the basic functionality. Once you guys can start playing around with it, I'll have even more motivation to finish up the polish and new features that I'm so excited about. Those of you who are still sticking around have been very patient and supportive, and I greatly appreciate it! Such meager rewards as I am able to provide will be forthcoming, I can promise that!
By the end of this month, I intend to finish the full adventure creation, editing, and viewing pipeline. The "creation" part is the missing link currently, and the other parts could use some smoothing out. But it's totally doable, and it's the most important part of the whole site.
In the meantime, check out the new (restricted, sorry) adventure "You Feel Very Cold..." It's wonderfully spooky and well-written! It never actually ends (still not sure why so many people link back to the beginning from the end... anybody want to comment?) but it's worth a read anyway!
There's no easy way to say it so here goes: Choosology is delayed again. The culprits? Sickness, personal issues, professional obligations, and the most long-lasting, frustrating, impossible-to-solve, yet ridiculously simple bug of my life. The last two weeks were spent trying to fix this one stupid thing, something I was constantly alllllmost figuring out but always ended up with no progress at all. Until today, when I finally, thank goodness, figured it out.
This should have been the time for putting the last-minute touches on everything, and it wasn't, and I apologize. I won't make any promises for the future, lest I be even more disappointing. But I'll let you know anything interesting as it happens!
In the meantime... keep on writing away.
