Hello, and welcome to Create Your Own Choose-Your-Own-Adventures!
Here, you may browse literally tens of exciting adventures, or register and create your very own!
Greetings all! As I'm sure you've been made aware by the recent festoonery of the world's malls and suburbs, it's getting near those December holiday times, which means a couple of things!
One is that we just celebrated Thanksgiving 'round these parts, and my belt is still tight.
The second is that there are more distractions and social obligations than usual this month, including, if I might say so, an exTREMEly important movie release on the 18th...
This means it'll likely be a lighter month of development, which is why my last note pushed the launch date back several months instead of just one or two.
However, progress is benig made! This past month was still light but saw a bunch of new polish and bug fixing, more work with the graphic designer, and filling in a few of the remaining gaps that need filling. The launch will include everything you need to make and read adventures, including the current adventures you made here, but some of the fancier stuff might have to wait. To that end, I'm focusing on creating a complete product first before worrying about it being the perfect product. Even so, I think you'll be excited by the new look, the new functionality, and the new possibilities!
Hope you have a great December!
Yes, it's true-- Choosology will be inevitably delayed a couple of months. This past month has been overwhelmingly busy with both personal and professional commitments, leaving precious little time to spend on extra coding. November shouldn't be too bad, but December undoubtedly will, so I can no longer commit to a year-end release of the site. The new ETA is March 1, 2016, and I will do my absolute darnedest to reach it.
I hope we can all see this as more of a Team Fortress 2-type delay than a Duke Nukem Forever one--namely, that the extra wait will be worth it.
The good news is that I'm essentially done with the insane work days (and weekends) for the foreseeable future, and starting this week will be back to a normal development schedule. Thanks for bearing with me and I can't wait to show you some progress next month!
Hello again!
This month was not as great as hoped, as I was struck down by illness for a few weeks. Nonetheless, progress was made on the "My Stuff" segment of the site, including setting up the basic tabs and fleshing out the Experiments tab.
Like everything, it's a work in progress, but you can see the basics; Your experiments are shown at the left, with the most recently-edited one first. You can enter the Editing screens for them from here, or simply re-read them if you're so inclined. You can also make a new Experiment or review recent comments. The shown recent comments are those made by the current user because that was the default when testing, but in reality they'll be recent comments on your own experiments by others, so you can see what people have been saying about your work!
This page is fairly simple and should be done soon. The next major tab is the "Resources" tab, which will take the place of the Add Pictures and Manage Pictures pages on the current site. Users will also be able to upload pictures directly in the experiment-editing process, and this will set that foundation as well.
After that... Degrees (aka Achievements)! Should be a fun month!
Another month gone, another batch of progress made. The visual editor continued to be refined this month, and saw the addition of screen-specific backgrounds, foregrounds, and border styles, as well as the choice to use the adventure's default settings. I also updated the adventure viewing to take this screen-specific data into account.
Nothing too exciting, and not really even worth a screenshot this time... but progress is being made, and I'm looking forward to another productive month; hopefully I can start getting into some new areas of the site, but the visual editor really is the heart and soul of the whole site, so it is going to get a disproportionate amount of attention!
In the meantime, there have been several exceptional adventures published of late! I suggest trying a few of the recent ones out if you haven't already!
Ah, August. Truly the eighthmost of the months.
Work is back in full swing, and is nearing completion on the new adventure/screen editor. Screens can now be created, moved, connected/disconnected, deleted, renamed, and have their content, choice texts, and background colors edited.
That's right: the new version of the visual editor (soon to be renamed) allows different backgrounds for individual screens! The overall adventure will still have a default background, but now you can do things like:
- Make ending screens super spooky (or joyous, depending on context)
- Subtly darken the background more and more as a reader makes more evil choices
- Provide background tile images suitable to the current location; perhaps a grassy field, castle cobblestones, or rushing river water, as the case may be
There are probably any number of exciting things to be done with this new flexibility, and I'm excited to unleash it in the coming months!
The new site is still planned to be released this year. Plenty of work remains, but with the visual editor nearly complete, all that remains will be the smaller auxiliary or optional screens that are not absolutely required for release. Get hyped (or not, it's really up to you)!
And of course, I will leave you with a new screenshot of the screen editor (still a work in progress, of course!), showing some of the many ways in which you might wish to reformat all the text on your screens, including the choice text:
